The latest GS 450h comes with its second-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system, resulting in improved fuel economy, lower emissions and improved performance – all qualities that Lexus says are the embodiment of this sedan.
The 2013 GS 450h is a gas electric hybrid that is capable of operating in gas-only, electric-only or combined modes. The gas motor is a 3.5-liter V6 running on the Atkinson cycle, which is then mated to a water-cooled permanent magnet electric motor
The GS 450h comes with 10 standard airbags, including knee airbags for both front occupants. Optional safety comes in the form of a pre-collision warning system, which also uses an infrared monitor to verify that the driver is watching the road ahead
Drivers can select from Eco, Sport S, Sport S+ and EV modes – each offering a unique blend of performance and economy. For example, selecting Sport mode will put the electric motor drive to a maximum rating of 650 volts.
Lexus has totally redesigned the subframe to accommodate the all-new multi-link rear suspension. Lexus says that thanks to the overall stiffer platform and widespread use of lighter components, they were able to use lighter-viscosity oil in their shocks. By Mark Kleis
